Sub-Zero refrigerators don't fail the way other refrigerators fail. A Whirlpool stops cooling and the compressor is the usual suspect. A Sub-Zero 648 stops cooling and you're looking at a sealed-system leak, a control-board fault, a defrost timer issue, a condenser fan motor, or a refrigerant charge that drifted over fifteen years. The diagnosis matters more than the wrench work — which is why generalist appliance repair companies frequently misdiagnose Sub-Zero units and recommend repairs that don't fix anything.
We don't service Bosch, LG, Whirlpool, KitchenAid, or anything else. Our trucks carry parts only for two brands: Sub-Zero and Wolf. Our technicians spend their entire workweek inside Sub-Zero compressor compartments and Wolf range backsplashes. That focus is the difference between a guess and a diagnosis.

Three failure modes account for most of our calls. Knowing which one you have shapes the conversation when you call us:
1. Not cooling (warm fresh-food side, cold freezer or vice versa)
Sub-Zero built-ins use two independent compressors — one for the refrigerator section, one for the freezer. When only one section warms, the other compressor is usually fine and you have a single-circuit failure: compressor relay, sealed-system leak in one circuit, or a fan motor on the warm side. We diagnose with manifold gauges and amp readings on-site rather than swapping parts blind. See our Sub-Zero not cooling troubleshooting guide.
2. Ice maker stopped producing
The Sub-Zero ice maker assembly is its own miniature system inside the freezer. Common failure points: the mold thermistor, the harvest motor, the water inlet valve, or a frozen water line. The 7000-series clear-ice units are mechanically more complex and have specific failure modes we see often. Ice maker troubleshooting →
3. Vacuum / condenser issues on older units
Sub-Zero classic 500/600-series units from the 1990s and early 2000s used a vacuum-condenser design that requires periodic cleaning to maintain efficiency. When neglected, you'll see freezer temperatures drift upward and the compressor running continuously. Condenser cleaning guide →
Sub-Zero error codes & troubleshooting
Many modern Sub-Zero models display fault codes through the control panel. If your unit is showing a code, our complete Sub-Zero error code reference covers what each one means and whether it's a DIY fix or needs a technician.
Pricing: what a Sub-Zero repair actually costs in NYC
Our service call is a flat $125. That covers travel, full on-site diagnostic, and a written, itemized estimate. If you approve the repair, that $125 is credited in full against the. You pay the diagnostic fee only if you decide not to proceed.
Beyond the service call, here's what most Sub-Zero repairs run in NYC. These are honest ranges from our actual job tickets, not marketing numbers:
Repair costs depend on the model, the exact failure mode, parts required, and on-site access conditions. Our flat $125 service call covers the on-site diagnostic and a written, itemized estimate. The $125 is credited toward the repair if you approve it — so you only pay the diagnostic fee if you decide not to proceed.
For an honest cost range tailored to your specific issue and model, call us at (646) 863-5411. With your model number and symptom, we can usually give you a realistic range on the phone before we even dispatch.

A new Sub-Zero 36" built-in installed is a major investment in NYC including delivery and removal. Most repairs even on units 15 years old are far more modest — well worth the spend on a refrigerator designed to last 20+ years. We'll tell you honestly if a unit is past saving.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are you authorized by Sub-Zero?
We are an independent repair company, not a Sub-Zero factory-authorized service center. That said, our technicians are factory-trained on Sub-Zero systems, we install only genuine OEM Sub-Zero parts, and most of our work week is spent on Sub-Zero units. Most customers find independent specialists faster, cheaper, and more transparent than factory dispatch.
How old of a Sub-Zero will you service?
We regularly service Sub-Zero units from the 1990s onward. The classic 500/600-series from that era is mechanically robust and frequently worth repairing. If your unit is older than 1990, give us a call — we can usually still help, though parts availability gets thin past 30 years.
My Sub-Zero is making a loud noise. Is it dangerous?
Most Sub-Zero noises are mechanical, not safety issues — a bad evaporator fan motor sounds dramatic but isn't dangerous. Exceptions: a hissing sound near the compressor compartment can indicate a refrigerant leak; an electrical buzzing followed by tripped breakers needs immediate attention. When in doubt, call us before unplugging the unit, since unplugging certain models triggers compartment compressor lockouts that complicate diagnosis.
How long does a typical Sub-Zero repair take on-site?
Most diagnostics take 30–60 minutes. A typical fan motor or thermostat replacement takes 60–90 minutes. Sealed-system work and compressor replacement run 3–5 hours. Door realignment on integrated panels takes 45–90 minutes.
Do you work on Sub-Zero Pro 48 / Pro 36 commercial-style units?
Yes. The Pro series uses many of the same internal components as the built-in line, plus a few unique parts like the stainless-handle assembly and visible refrigerator-grade hinges. We stock the common Pro-series wear items on our trucks.
My building requires a COI before any contractor enters. Can you provide one?
Yes, within 30 minutes during business hours, with the additional-insured language your building requires. If your management uses a specific portal (RealPage, BuildingLink, RiseBuildings, etc.), we've filed COIs through all of them. Have the building name and management company ready when you book.
